I’d like to tell you a traditional story called Journey to the Westwhich is familiar to everyone in China. At the age of 4ish, I heard it the first time telling by my grandma as a bedside story, but indeed it was just part of it. After I attended to the primary school, I was able to read the book of it. Then, I realized it to be one of the Four Great Classical Novelsof Chinese literatures.

what it was about

The skeleton of the storyis Xuanzang's quest to bring backBuddhist scriptures, fromVulture Peak in India, but the flesh is provided by the conflict between Xuanzang'sdisciples, and thevarious evilsthat besethim on the way. One of his disciples called Sun Wukong was really resourceful. He was a monkey born from a stone and learned 72 types of transformations. With the protection from the monkey and another 3 disciples, Xuanzang succeed to reach the destination at the end of the story.

Like openinga box of Pandora, there were so many evils waiting in front of the road of xuanzang. But they made breakthroughs left and rightin thetough and tediousjourney.

It seems to be an encouraging story, telling me to persist my studying or working until I succeed.

其它素材The Story of 3 Monks(三个和尚)

A young monk lives a simple life in a temple on top of a hill. He has one daily task of hauling two buckets of water up the hill. (打两桶水上山)

He tries to share the job with another monk, but the carry pole(扁担) is only long enough for one bucket.

The arrival of a third monk prompts everyone to expect that someone else will take on the chore(烦人的工作).大家指望第三个小和尚的到来能接手这个打水的工作。Consequently，no one fetches water though everybody is thirsty.

At night, a rat comes to scrounge and then knocks the candleholder, leading to a devastating fire(毁灭性的火灾) in the temple. 晚上一只老鼠偷吃的打翻烛台，引发大火。

The three monks finally unite together and make a concerted effort to put out the fire. 团结一心扑火

The Frog in the Shallow Well 井底之蛙

It said to a turtle that lived in the East Sea, "I am so happy! When I go out, I jump about on the railing(井栏) beside the mouth of the well(井口). When I come home, I rest in the holes on the broken wall of the well. If I jump into the water, it comes up to my armpits (腋窝)and holds up my cheeks. If I walk in the mud, it covers up my feet. I look around at the wriggly worms, crabs and tadpoles(虾蟹蝌蚪), and none of them can compare with me. Moreover, I am lord of this trough(井的主人) of water and I stand up tall in this shallow well. My happiness is full. My dear sir, why don't you come often and look around my place?"

Before the turtle from the East Sea could get its left foot in the well, its right knee got stuck. It hesitated and retreated. The turtle told the frog

"Even a distance of a thousand cannot give you an idea of the sea's width; even a height of a thousand cannot give you an idea of its depth. 海的广大，哪止千里;海的深度，哪只千来丈

In the old times, there were floods nine years out of ten, but the waters in the sea did not increase. There were droughts seven years out of eight, but the waters in the sea did not decrease. The sea does not change along with the passage of time(时间的流逝) and its level does not rise or fall according to the amount of rain that falls. The greatest happiness is to live in the East Sea."海水深浅完全不受洪涝影响

After listening to these words, the frog of the shallow well was shocked into realization of his own insignificance and became very ill at ease.听完这些，青蛙发现自己很肤浅
