There is an ongoing discussion about whether the government should increase the tax on tourism industry in order to generate more fund for its development. Personally, I believe it would be reasonable to marginally raise tax for tourism sector, but the increase should not be excessive.
On the one hand, it is true that the tourism industry contributes significantly to the economy of a country. The industry brings in foreign currency, fosters employment and encourages the development of a number of other industries such as hospitality, transportation, and food. By increasing taxes on tourism, the government would be able to raise billions of dollars each year. This money can be useful for improving infrastructure, promoting local tourism for development and rehabilitation of historical sites.
On the other hand, hiking up the tax too much could damage the tourism industry. Countries like Malta and Cyprus, with very low tax rates, have seen a boom in tourism in recent years. Higher taxes may lead to higher costs for foreign tourists, who may choose to visit other countries that apply lower taxes. If taxes are excessive, they could decrease tourist spending on shopping, accommodation, and food, all of which benefit the local economy.
In conclusion, while it would be reasonable for governments to slightly raise the tax on tourism, they should be cautious when doing so in order not to make their countries less competitive in terms of attracting tourists.
