Zoos are sometimes seen as necessary but poor alternative to anatural environment. Is itnecessary to keep animals in zoos?

In the modern society, zoos are almost indispensable places in largecities for people tovisit. In some large zoos, there are various animals fromspace to sea and from primitiveinvertebrates to advanced and intelligentmammals. In the zoos, all animals, including thoserare animals, such as panda,Africa elephant, and North-East tiger, could enjoy good care andprotectionaway from any hurt. However, along with the stronger natural

environmentalprotection consciousness, many people think that to put animals intosmallcages will change their living instincts, and therefore break the ecologicalbalance.Viewed from the basic relations between animals and human beings,animals should havethe equal freedom with human beings. They are all forms oflife. Animals have their own livinginstinct, and it is this instinct thatforms the biological chain of the Earth. This relation is called“EcologicalBalance” academically. For example, insect—bird—snake. If most birds in aregionare killed and locked into cages by human beings, the pests will eat outall crops, and snakeswill lose a large part of food resources, thereforeleading to starvation and death.

This opinion sounds ideal theoretically. However in reality, humanbeings and otheranimals cannot stay together peacefully on the Earth. Becauseof human beings’ lust forfortune, many valuable animals are killed or sold,especially those endangered species.

Therefore, zoos appear as an active wayfor people to protect those poor animals. First, this isan action not only foranimals but also for human being itself. Once the biological chain isbroken, humanbeings will be punished inevitably. Next, zoos can serve a purpose of

educatingand entertaining people, narrowing the distance between human beings andanimals.Last, zoos can be a scientific study center to rescue more endangeredspices and make animalsbetter serve people’s need.

The key point of this topic is freedom or protection. In my opinion,those two aspects canbe unified. It is necessary to keep animals in zoos forthe purpose of protection, teaching andstudy. Let’s think itfurther, the purpose of all these actions is to make animals live
