Task：

Many students are taught to push themselves and try hard to be better than their classmates, rather than work together for everyone’s benefits. Do the disadvantages of training students to be competitive outweigh the advantages?

很多学生被教育要努力学习，要超过其他同学，而不是一起学习，共同受益。这种训练学生变得有好胜心的方式是否缺点大于优点?

Sample answer：

When it comes to the issue about whether giving students more training should be promoted, some people argue that competitiveness achieved through training could bring more advantages to students, but I cannot agree with this opinion.

Admittedly, young students could gain more skills after taking part in more courses and activities. It is common that parents are eager to send their children to some extracurricular classes, such as language courses or artistic courses. Through such courses, children may gain higher grades or obtain special skills compared to peers. Then, they may be enrolled by better schools due to their outstanding performances. However, such behavior of parents may bring more detriments to their children.

Initially, selfishness may arise from a strong notion of competition. When children are asked by parents to attend a lot of training, some children may have a feeling that they are the focus of everybody. They are taught to exceed others, which could be translated into another sentence, “they are taught to gain more profits by defeating others”. Then, some students may only pay attention to their own profits, which may not be suitable in the current society where teamwork turns to be increasingly more crucial.

Furthermore, devoting so much time to some specific courses, students may have insufficient time and energy to cultivate their own interests. Many courses aimed at students’ competitiveness may not be so attractive, but parents will still persuade their children to take those courses to be more competitive. However, taking courses may leave students no room for their own hobbies. Without personal hobbies, many students may just repeat their boring schedules every day without happiness.

In sum, considering the selfishness acquired and the joy lost, disadvantages of training students may overshadow its benefits.
