I have received many pieces of advice in different situations and I‘ve learned a lot from the advice. The most useful advice I’ve received so far is “Be yourself”. Just two words but it means a lot to me. When I was in my first year at college, I took part in a lot of activities for building my social network which I thought would be beneficial in the future. Soon I became popular in these students societies. Other students thought that I was active and outgoing, so they began to invite me to attend more activities. But actually I was not that outgoing and most of the time I preferred to be alone and focus on my own things. I got stuck in those activities and hardly had time to study or hang out with my close friends. And the most annoying thing was, I had to pretend that I really enjoy being in those activities, which made me exhausted. I shared my feelings with my mother and she told me “Be yourself”. Then she explained more about these two words. She said that one could not make everybody satisfied. If I wanted to be popular, I would have to pretend to be perfect in order to please my admirers, but that’s too burdensome for me. If I kept doing that, I would forget who I really was. After the conversation, I felt relieved and determined to leave more time for myself. I was happier afterwards since I didn’t have to pretend to be another man. Now I always think of what my mother has told me when I am not willing to do something.
