The bar chart below shows the percentage of the population aged 60 and over in five countries: Brazil, China, Japan, Russia and USA.
The data for the chart was collected by the World Bank and is based on the percentage of the total population in each country. The countries are ranked in order of their total population, with China being the most populous country, followed by India, the United States, Indonesia and Brazil.
The bar chart clearly shows that in all five countries, the percentage of the population aged 60 and over is increasing. In China and India, this increase is particularly显著 (noticable), with the percentage of elderly people increasing from less than 5% in 1980 to around 10% in 2010. This increase is also evident in Russia, where the percentage of elderly people has increased from around 7% to 15% over the same period. In Brazil and Japan, the increase is less显著 (noticable), with the percentage of elderly people increasing from around 7% to around 14% over the same period.
The data presented in the bar chart suggests that the aging population is a global phenomenon that is occurring in countries with different cultures, economies and societal structures. The increase in the percentage of elderly people is due to a combination of factors, including increased life expectancy and falling birth rates. As people live longer, there is a corresponding increase in the number of elderly people, leading to an aging population and a corresponding increase in the demand for healthcare, social services and other support systems.
