The three maps illustrate how the village of Willington transformed over a period of 220 years, from 1780 to 2000.
Overall, Willington evolved from a small agricultural settlement into a largely residential town, with significant developments in infrastructure and the disappearance of its original industries.
In 1780, Willington was a predominantly rural community. The western part was dominated by farmland, while the east contained several large estates. A river flowed from north to south, crossed by a single bridge in the center, with a road running parallel to it.
By 1860, the area had undergone considerable industrialization. The farmlands and estates in the east were replaced by a railway line running vertically, with a new station built nearby. Several factories were constructed along the river, and the original road was expanded. However, the western farmland and the bridge remained largely unchanged.
In 2000, Willington was almost unrecognizable. All the factories and the railway had been removed. The western farmland was completely converted into a suburban housing estate with a new road network. The eastern area saw the construction of a retirement home, a school, and a sports field. The river and bridge were retained, but the bridge was noticeably widened to accommodate increased traffic. The only surviving feature from the earliest period was a small wooded area in the north.
